Stover Ventures, LLC of Osage has received a $1,000 finalist award from the John Pappajohn Iowa Entrepreneurial Venture Competition. The company is applying a patented process to corn stover to extract highly effective antioxidants while creating a more digestible animal feed. They plan to open their first production facility in Osage.

If it’s a "bang-bang" play, then it’s ruled incomplete. And this was no doubt a bang-bang play, hence why the refs had to make a split-second decision on the call. 

Perhaps 10 years ago this would have been a potential prediction, but if I have 1.5 terabytes at home (heheh… I kinda like the sounds of that!), I can’t imagine what I’d have that I wouldn’t just store locally.

I am a geek but I know many Joes/Janes that are not interested too much in computers BECAUSE of Windows. It’s too easy to screw up a Windows computer, it’s too easy to buy a camera and not being able to connect and decently use it. And security is another big issue to them (and to us too , nobody understand why they have so much spywares, adwares and viruses, but they are a big annoiance for ordinary users.

An immediate real boost to performance could come from directly compiling “some” SW code into HW using FPGAs where speed ups of 1-100k are possible right now depending on the type of app. If the app looks highly repetetive, structured & like a chip could be designed to speed it up (think DSP etc), then indeed it can be turned into a soft chip swapped into onboard FPGA when needed. This type of SW to HW compile can be done on the desktop with tools that can be bought now (Celoxica Handel C, etc). The exact type of apps that we already know could benefit from such single 150GHz cpus can already be built with FPGA accelerators using the most natural form of HW parallelism there is, thousands of Wires, Pipelines & good old combinatorial logic. AND the growth in this SW=>HW technology is right now on a much faster growth than a measly doubling every 18 months. FPGAs are catching up with cpu speed (but always a factor of 5 or so behind). FPGAs benefit directly from bigger dies made possible with shrinks allowing more logic cells on board. Right now state of the art (compare to 3GHz P4 for wow factor) are Virtex 10000 series with equivalent of several million gates.

“Wrought iron style” would be accurate, but I’m sure we’ll get a lot of people calling us EJWs (Engineering Justice Warriors) and that we’re dumb for using more accurate terms when everyone “already knows” what we’re actually talking about since actual wrought iron isn’t around anymore.
