Fancy Gap, North Carolina. How did I get to be this advanced age without ever hearing of Fancy Gap? I was driving the morning we traveled through, but first we pulled off the road so he could show me how to manually downshift his big Chevy truck. I’d need to do that on the seven-mile grade after the Gap. And then we hit fog. That’s such a common occurrence that they’ve painted special lines to follow through that stretch as well as several escape lanes for runaway trucks and signs flashing “FOG ADVISORY”.
