We made it to the bottom, down numerous tall stone steps and steep grades, to find ourselves with still a mile and a half of paved road to Harpers Ferry. And what a fascinating, totally unexpected place it turned out to be. I won’t go into it here, but suggest if you haven’t been there, go. Preferably when the powers that be are letting the shuttle buses run. Because after exploring for an hour or so we headed back to the dreaded trail, each privately scared we couldn’t make it back up.

The most problematic aspect of this production is that it demonstrates how far we still have to go in gender equality. All of the historical figures featured are white men. Virtually all of the contemporary talking heads are men. And as the program starts, the two main movers and shakers of the mission are men: crew Captain Ben Sawyer, and Ed Grann as the Musk equivalent. When the crew establishes a beachhead on Mars, and Commander Hana Seung has obviously taken time to apply copious amounts of eye liner and lip gloss before making her formal reports to mission control, we can kind of tell how the space program will still think of women in 2033 and beyond. And for 2018, I think, “Really???” and am a bit embarrassed for ourselves.

ICM client John Singleton also had family on his mind, too. He brought his son and daughter to the party and told THR that they all three are working with the agency (his son on animated projects and his daughter is represented as a screenwriter). "I love what Chris does every year," he said. "I ran into my friend Regina King. I’ve known her since we were both at USC so we were sharing stories about that. I also ran into [Abdul Williams] who wrote The Bobby Brown Story. I’ve never met him but he told me he’s going to pitch a new show and I said, ‘Dude, we gotta get together.’ So this is just like a family picnic for me."
