The only real future for faster cpus is significant use of multiple distributed lower power cpus that can spread out the heat. Once we all use multiple cpus at any frequency, power should be just a matter of how many do you want to get the job done & how to get rid of the heat. It all comes down to the SW industry getting a handle on Par programming for real instead of dicking around with minor use of a few threads here & there when the APIs force it on unwitting developers.
