Even in the most advanced designs, there are no repeating muzzle-loaders. In the field, you basically have one shot to prove your skill. That’s part of the alluring challenge. A second shot requires jamming pre-measured grains of black powder or hardened cylinders of Pyrodex or Triple 7s down the barrel with your ramrod, which is always attached to your barrel. You next need to place your bullet down the barrel as well, on top of the powder, forcing it all the way down with your ramrod. You also need to insert in front of the hammer another primer, without which, the gun can’t fire. That’s why it’s perfectly legal to carry a muzzleloader containing both powder and bullet in your home, in your car, to and from your hunt. As long as you have no primer in it, you’re legal — and your gun is safe. Reloading takes time. A deer that’s been shot at pauses only so long, if at all.
