Yes computers and communications will get much faster before leveling off. However Moore’s Law also brings with it a true challenge. What lags behind is not the hardware technologies of communications, storage or computation. What lags behind is the software technologies which are still in the stone ages. As the hardware technologies further outpace the invention of innovative software systems we are headed for real trouble. The key issue facing software people is the massive increase in complexity needed to build the current systems. Larger human teams simply won’t do since software development teams do not scale very well. Look at the level of software complexity and errors in software from Microsoft for example. Even NASA, which takes pride in their low level of bugs per million lines of code, has serious challenges creating and maintaining their software systems. More eyes won’t do. We need to invent systems that assist us in programming and remove the “rote” programming from programming. We need systems that take our “specifications” and write our software – with our guidance – for us. Fortunately such systems are under development.

Two North Iowans – Ian Stockberg with Good Shepherd, Inc., in Mason City and Josh Barnes with Osage Municipal Utilities – were among 40 who graduated from the Leadership Iowa program during the 2018 Taking Care of Business Conference in Coralville last month. Leadership Iowa, a program of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation, is an eight-month professional development program that allowed participants to travel "to numerous locations throughout the state to learn about those issues and to gain a better understanding of the role they can play in addressing them."

The unit in question comes from an outfit called CORE Outdoor Power. The line trimmer was powered by a big lithium-ion battery pack, but [Ben] concentrated on the unique motor for his teardown. After a problematic entry into the very sturdy case at the far end of the trimmer’s shaft, he found what looks like a souped-up version of [Carl Bugeja]’s PCB brushless motors. The rotors, each with eight large magnets embedded, are sandwiched on either side of a very thick four-layer PCB with intricately etched heavy copper traces. The PCB forms the stator, with four flat coils. The designer pulled a neat trick with the Hall-effect sensors needed for feedback; rather than go with surface-mount sensors, which would add to the thickness of the board, they used through-hole packages soldered to surface pads, with the body of the sensor nestled in a hole in the board. The whole design is very innovative, but sadly, [Ben]’s analysis shows that it has poor performance for its size and weight.

In disabling those memory controllers, Nvidia also turns off a pair of TU106’s ROP partitions and two 512KB slices of its L2 cache. What starts as a GPU with 64 ROPs and 4MB of L2 is consequently trimmed to 48 ROPs and 3MB of cache for 2060. Like 2070, NVLink support is long gone at this price point.

POULTRY PROBLEMS, AGAIN: Democrats are again pressing USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service on a new waiver policy that would raise line processing speeds at certain poultry plants, arguing that the agency failed to demonstrate that the policy is legal. In a letter provided to POLITICO, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) argue that a September Federal Register notice formally announcing the policy “attempts to defend [its] validity. . .but again fails to show that its criteria meet the minimum requirements of current regulations.” They also complain that FSIS failed to update them over the past 60 days on the status of waiver applications, as requested in a July 30 letter.
