Scientists have their first direct, detailed look at how a single atom catalyzes a chemical reaction. The reaction is the same one that strips poisonous carbon monoxide out of car exhaust, and individual atoms of iridium did the job up to 25 times more efficiently than the iridium nanoparticles containing 50 to 100 atoms that are used today.

Apple always promises “10-hour” battery life for its iPads, regardless of size, but real-world run times appear to be improved relative to the prior models. Although the 11-inch iPad’s battery is a hint smaller than the 10.5-inch model’s, I found myself getting better than 10-hour run times during normal use, even when the iPad Pro was being used to charge the Apple Pencil. I was able to use the Pro continuously for around six hours of plane travel time, including Wi-Fi browsing, without falling below 50 percent battery life. Users are reporting up to 14 hours of run time from the 12.9-inch model, though obviously numbers will vary based on the apps and brightness you choose.

MORE ‘NOTICE TO APPEAR’: USCIS said Thursday it will continue to expand types of visa applications where officers may issue a “notice to appear” in cases where there’s evidence of fraud or criminal activity, or when someone is denied an immigration benefit and lacks legal status. Starting Nov. 19, USCIS may begin deportation proceedings based on denials of applications for T, U, U-1 and I-360 visas. The expansion will also include I-730 Refugee, Violence Against Women Act, and Special Immigrant Juvenile petitions and applications to register permanent residents or an adjustment of status. However, expansion has not yet impacted employment based visas. Read the announcement here.

Night two found us in Harrisonburg, Virginia, another Hampton/Holiday, I can’t remember which. These Interstate exits are obviously planned to serve the traveler as pit stops on the way from here to there. Besides the plethora of hotels – usually at least three, maybe half a dozen – there are, naturally, several gas stations, and a restaurant or two. The unit in question comes from an outfit called CORE Outdoor Power. The line trimmer was powered by a big lithium-ion battery pack, but [Ben] concentrated on the unique motor for his teardown. After a problematic entry into the very sturdy case at the far end of the trimmer’s shaft, he found what looks like a souped-up version of [Carl Bugeja]’s PCB brushless motors. The rotors, each with eight large magnets embedded, are sandwiched on either side of a very thick four-layer PCB with intricately etched heavy copper traces. The PCB forms the stator, with four flat coils. The designer pulled a neat trick with the Hall-effect sensors needed for feedback; rather than go with surface-mount sensors, which would add to the thickness of the board, they used through-hole packages soldered to surface pads, with the body of the sensor nestled in a hole in the board. The whole design is very innovative, but sadly, [Ben]’s analysis shows that it has poor performance for its size and weight.

The whole thing was very bizarre and very confusing and one of the exact reasons people get so up in arms over NFL football games on big stages: when there’s a "standalone" game that everyone is watching, particularly one with playoff stakes, the job the officials do is only magnified. And when the microscope gets on refs trying to officiate an incredibly complex and subjective game operating at a high speed, things can get ugly.
